About Board Certification

Dr. Benjamin Wright is a board-certified orthodontist in Severna Park, MD, and has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) since 2003. At Wright Orthodontics, that credential stands behind every treatment plan, from a child’s first orthodontic visit to Invisalign for adults. When you trust someone with a smile that lasts a lifetime, board certification is one of the clearest signs that your orthodontist has gone beyond the minimum requirements.

Is Every Orthodontist Board Certified?

No. Every orthodontist must hold a dental license and complete an accredited orthodontic residency after dental school. Board certification is a separate, voluntary step that many orthodontists never take.

To become board certified, an orthodontist must prove their knowledge and clinical skill to the American Board of Orthodontics through demanding examinations reviewed by experienced board-certified orthodontists. It shows that the doctor’s training and treatment results meet a nationally recognized standard.

What Is the American Board of Orthodontics?

The American Board of Orthodontics is the only certifying board for orthodontics recognized by the American Dental Association. Founded in 1929, it is the oldest specialty board in dentistry.

The ABO works to raise the quality of orthodontic care by:

  • Setting the national standard for certification in orthodontics
  • Encouraging continued learning throughout an orthodontist’s career
  • Holding certified orthodontists accountable to that standard over time

How Does an Orthodontist Become ABO Board Certified?

The ABO certification process tests both what an orthodontist knows and how well they treat patients. It includes:

  • A written examination covering the full range of orthodontic science and clinical knowledge
  • A clinical examination in which ABO examiners evaluate the orthodontist’s diagnosis, treatment planning, and decision-making

Only after passing every phase does an orthodontist earn the title of Board-Certified Diplomate. Certification is not a one-time achievement. Board-certified orthodontists must keep meeting ABO requirements to maintain their status, so their knowledge stays current as orthodontic care advances.

Why Choose a Board-Certified Orthodontist in Severna Park?

Board certification gives you added confidence in the person guiding your care. A board-certified orthodontist has:

  • Had their clinical judgment independently evaluated by peers
  • Shown a commitment to excellence beyond what a license requires
  • Committed to ongoing learning throughout their career

For families in Severna Park, Annapolis, Pasadena, and across Anne Arundel County, that means carefully planned treatment, whether it’s early orthodontic treatment for a child, braces for a teen, or Invisalign for an adult.
